So many Paris greats! Thanks. Last January I headed to Chartier for lunch solo, and got seated with 2 French couples, for a wonderful meal and great conversation. They were not Parisians, either, but make sure to go together to Chartier once or twice a year when they visit.
Perfect timing! Yesterday my husband (writer Kevin Nelson who freelanced at New West) asked me if I’d picked the restaurants for our Paris trip in October. I hadn’t (it’s been decades since we’ve been there and the sheer volume of choices are a bit overwhelming), but you’ve given us a great list to start from.
When you are next in Paris, may I suggest Dominique Crenn's fairly new restaurant, Golden Poppy. The food was inventive and delicious. Seafood and vegetable forward. The room was beautiful. Service was spotty on our visit in September 2023, but I attribute that to the newness of the place.
From a former diner at your SF restaurant, thank you for the wonderful meals and hospitality years ago - I can still remember the taste of the incredible lamb served three different ways. Perfection.
Aww, back :) Being completely passionate and fully invested with what I now do, I can't think of a favorite restaurant in Paris right now. However, I will give it some thought...
FYI: If you want to know about what I now do, I would be honored if you visited my site: https://alainrondelli.com/. If you want to know more, here is a link my latest blog post: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/collaboration-human-centric-culture-alain-rondelli-ayi1e/ -- In case you are even more curious, I'm also currently working on a set of 7 small booklets which aim to help Executives Propel the Value(s) of their businesses through a methodology I’ve developed and is focused on the super power of Human Centricity. Loving it :))
I too remember dining at 2 of your restaurants in SF. We took my mother-in-law, one time, & she enjoyed your tasting menu immensely. Thank you & always & hope we get to taste your great food again -
As we very often say, never say never... However, ma passion transmuted toward why propelling the value of human relationships within organizations is now more than ever crucial and how to nourish those and make them blossom. Can sometime be challenging, however I'm truly Love this new mission :)) Thanks again, be well and warm regards.
Hello Ruth, I'm glad you included Chartier, as no Paris restaurant list is complete without it! It was my first Paris restaurant experience when I spent a semester in France in the mid-seventies. Our professor took us there several times. Each meal always started with a wonderful soup! I've dined there many times over the years and my favourite dessert was a warm compote of prunes over vanilla ice cream. The menu for Jamin also brought back memories. While I never dined at the restaurant, we got to experience his creations in the luxurious dining car of the "Nouvelle Premiere" train from Paris to Strasbourg in the mid-eighties.
Loved meeting you at Clifton Park a few weeks ago and enjoyed hearing how the latest book came to fruition. I love Paris as well and have my own story as to how I got there (and have returned!) Reread My Kitchen Year after hearing you and recalled the pain I felt when Gourmet ended. Gourmet was a guilty pleasure for a poor psychiatric social worker who dreamed of travel but only was able to do so after the kids were launched. Enjoying the story and so many of those recipes once again!
Ah, Jamin & E.DEHILLERIN. Oh, what memories they bring back to mind. Dinner in the 1980s there with our 8-year-old son. Him: those famous half-butter-half-potatoes potatoes. Me: pig's head for the first time. It was deconstructed. Then onto DEHILLERIN for pick up some copper pans that still grace our kitchen 40 years later. Thank you so much for resurrecting them for me . . . .
I had to read again due to finishing your wonderful Paris Novel last night that I really didn’t want it to end, what a beautiful book I’m going to post on my instagram and hopefully all my friends can receive your beautiful gift to us, and actually it was a gift to me from my husband who is always reading things I would never read and that’s probably because he started his early life at the LA Times and is a news junky . I believe I’ve mentioned before Michael Williams worked with you every Tuesday getting the food section together .
Hi Ruth, Thank you so much for a beautiful book. It was a pleasure to read and can hardly wait for the next book. I was a Cherry Bombe in NYC where I got your book and had the pleasure of seeing you in Santa Cruz for Save Me the Plums. Longggggg time fan and treasure all your books. I will be re-reading Paris so I can look up every single spot/restaurant so when I visit Paris again. You are a gem.
They have the best versions of my favorite breads - Pain au Cereale and le Viking. We love their baguette sandwiches. They even have a smoked salmon sandwich on a Viking bread baguette.
I prefer great bread to pastries but my partner tried and failed to find a decent brownie, in Paris or elsewhere in France! So far, Americans make the best brownies.

Thank you! I’ll be in Paris in November and will definitely reserve a place at one or more of these.

Aww, now you’ve made mine as well! If you have any favorite restaurants in Paris, we’d love to know.

Ooooooh! This is great. But I’m going to Paris next week! Please share the name of the vintage store!

A classic. Merci!

Wow Ruth! So much incredible information.
This is so neat looking! Wow!
Re: le grand restaurant - the caviar is…COOKED?!? …with seaweed? I’m sorry but no self-respecting gourmand would COOK caviar…

I'd like to recommend La Parisienne boulangerie in the Latin Quarter of Paris. http://www.boulangerielaparisienne.com/
