Save Me the Plumbs was the first memoir I ever read, about 20 years ago. I loved it and all your follow up books. Congratulations Ruth on your James Beard award. Your nostalgic, throw-back column is one of the best here on Substack
Congrats, of course. This one took me right down Memory Lane. 1968, age 20, had my first cup of real coffee up the hill a little from the Cheese Board at Peet’s. Fully caffeinated MANY years later.
I cant imagine anyone more worthy. Ironically i am out the door to the post office to mail a watercolor portrait ive fone of Tom Tower of zyoungstown , ny.
When i moved to Buffalo 30 years ago i never expected to find the best tomatoes of my life. Born and bred in Virginia i thought we had the best. Having lived in texas, i knew they werent there. Samples from new jersey, both carolinas, California etc were often good but ony after arriving in buffalo did i achieve nirvana.
Tom’s tomatoes are grown on a multi generational farm. The seeds, supposedly, were smuggled in from Holland in the band of tom’s hat. They are sweetly acidic and taste like sun.
You deserve this award because you share it with so many growers and makers like tom.
FELICITATIONS, Ruth. All deserved, and I am old enough to have known the orange dressing with the misnomer and lucky enough to have had a mama who subscribed to Gourmet Magazine in 1942 and made her own vinaigrette all her life. And her own bread, and more. Wish I had a copy of the drawing I did of you for the LA Times ong ago and could send you the original.
Suzanne! How great to hear from you. I think you don't have the original because I've got it. Somewhere. A drawing on acetate. I will try to find it....
Thanks for writing about Marcel. I married a chef I met while working at the Trellis while I was in grad school. I pulled out my 1988 copy of The Trellis Cookbook to commemorate Marcel this week. Although I divorced the chef a long time ago, the memories are still good. And tasty.
Congratulations Ruth! Thanks for reminding me of the wonderful white corn from Rancho Santa Fe that I tasted when I lived in San Diego County. Probably bought the strawberries too! Loved The Paris Novel, my favorite city!
Bob Klein,Oakland, is producing pasta, flour, bread, and other items with ancient grains and nutritious grains. He had a restaurant for 30 years. You might have gone to it. Well known chef. The product is called Community Grains.
"Kol Hakavod!" "Bravo!" "Congrats!" and all that jazz! I have read all of your books and just finished "The Paris Novel" which was a pure delight! It would make the sweetest movie --- hope hope!
I will read the entire speech. Just finished the Paris Novel. Loved it. Thank you.
Beautiful speech and congratulations for your well deserved recognition!

I'm publishing my third book on substack. You might have fun with some of it when you have nothing else to do, haha. Crazy in the Kitchen.

Forgot to add my congratulations. How many 'James Beard Awards' does that make for you? So cool and so deserving.
