I too was lucky enough to be invited to the Per Se party. The food was exactly as you describe. My favorite moment? Meeting you! You were as gracious and charming and engaging as I always imagined you to be. Thanks for the picture. And, as you can see, I did indeed subscribe to your Substack!

I agree 100%! Traveling with friends and sharing a room is the best! Adult sleepovers!!!! I’m lucky to have several friends I travel with and share rooms with. Added bonus, you can book a fancier room!

Ruth, thank you for this delightful essay about the joys of traveling with friends. It brought a wide grin to my face as I read it, particularly the part about staying together in 1 hotel room, like a sleepover with old friends! It inspires me to plan more of these vacations, this time for sheer delight, laughter, and love.

Once again, you prove to be a master of words! I've been "traveling" for the last 2 years, spending my children's inheritance and eating foods not normally found in the states, walking miles every day. I am blissfully happy. Another fun fact, we had an Uncle Bob, too. Keep writing and I will keep walking!

I loved reading about your travels and the delights of sharing a hotel room with friends. That they traveled across the country to help you after you lost your job is the sign of true friendship. As for your rhubarb recipe--wow, I can't wait til spring and will enjoy making this unusual recipe.

Ruth, I once was your bartender AND waiter back at Lupa restaurant way back in 2006-7. I remember meeting you, and thinking how down to earth and nice you were. I had read your for years, being a small town Wisconsin boy new to the City, and thinking how unattainable you must be. Well, obviously you aren't. Loving the zine. I ended up getting into food (you being one of the reasons) working at FN, and becoming a food stylist, and now, starting to write. I ended up buying a bowl company in Wisconsin called Ellingers Bowls. Truly would be a good gift guide. This is not a sales pitch, but I really wanted to send you a bowl more as a Thank you for continuing to write. In a world of ever changing food media (sometimes not so great) I'm glad there are still these real publications. I love the old menus, btw. Hope you're well, Bretton

A little disappointed the recipe isn’t for cod sperm.

Thanks for the virtual girlfriends’ trip. Those plump little sperm looked at first glance like perfectly cooked butter beans (didn’t notice the cleft).

Delightful! Traveling and eating vicariously with you is so much fun...if somewhat envy provoking. The Per Se party sounds absolutely off the chart...lucky you for getting to enjoy something so amazing. :)

I would love to have the travel companions that you have had the pleasure of being with! It was such fun to hear these stories and to appreciate the value of a good sense of humor, and culinary curiosity!

The Goldilocks pans are indeed a fine value and perform beautifully. I purchased a set when they were first available because we had just remodeled our kitchen and my old cookware was destined for Goodwill!

I love them!
