Such a beautiful tribute to him. Will someone please publish a collection of his writing?! I would love to read all of his old reviews and really anything he wrote all in one book.
Ruth, I’m sitting here crying — thank you for the beautiful words: about Jonathan’s profound impact, about the tolls of doing the work, and yet, its immense purpose. Needed to read this today. Thank you for sharing.
What a gorgeous speech about the most delightful of voices from Southern California. I still miss the gentle cadence of his voice on Good Food as he tempted you to go eat well, wherever you might be. Lovely man, he seemed. 😢😢♥️♥️
Once again your words matter. Reading about LA & JG was wonderful! His work is Legend around here & all the issues you raised about & around food ; provoking!
Reading this three months late, but had to chime in and say that this piece was so beautifully written. As a food writer myself, you (and Jonathan) have inspired me ❤️
Thank you for this wonderful tribute - I used to live in LA and always appreciated him, and when I returned for a visit in 2017, I was dining with my husband and young son at the delicious Felix on Abbot Kinney - lo and behold there was JG. It was more thrilling to me than any celebrity spotting - needless to say, the whole time, I observed him eating with transcendent glee, smiling and laughing with his companions, and barely spoke to my loved ones during the meal (they had no idea what I was on about). I would never have gone over to disturb him, but a year later wished that I'd done so.
We moved to Santa Barbara in 1988 and subscribed to the LA Times (the local paper was terrible). We LOVED Jonathan’s Counter Intelligence and eagerly awaited its appearance each week. We still think of him when we find some hole in the wall place and wonder what he would have written about it. Thanks for your rememberings.
Thank you that brought tears to my eyes. Much like the tears that were there the night that Jonathon died and we drove back into the city and it was lit up Gold in his honor. ❤️

What a beautiful piece, Ruth. And what a perfect tribute to Jonathan. Thank you for letting us read it.

Thank you Ruth for a beautifully written piece. I am crying in remembering his articles and the love the city had for him. How he is missed.
The way you describe how he shaped how we see + think about LA...truly GOLD❤️

Beautifully written. I could feel the love and deep friendship in these words.

I absolutely had that experience of JG forming my experience of LA... thank you for sharing!
I only met him once and will always remember his kindness.

SB, my hometown. Yup, the paper became a horrible joke.
Jonathan Gold and his writing made Los Angeles home for me. He is sorely missed.
God bless you.
