Congratulations and so glad you found a seat in the bar at Girl and the Goat! Stephanie Izzard’s restaurants in Chicago are our family favorites. Be sure to try Cabra next time you are visiting the not so Windy City.
Your James Beard award is well deserved. You introduced me to a whole new world of food as editor of Gourmet Magazine in the 1980s. Thank you.
Congratulations! I was a frequent diner at Swallow in the seventies, and then bought almost all your books. [Your first is selling for over $14K on Amazon.] Loved your restaurant reviews and your books. I make pork and tomatillo stew regularly. But the best remark of yours was buying strawberries in Rancho Santa Fe with Alice Waters and describing them as "red all the way through." That is a blissful strawberry. Thank you so much!
Oh, vintage Frontera Grill! A couple of years before that, the duck tacos al carbon had grilled pineapple with them, and when I realized in the cab home that I had left my bag of leftovers behind on the table, i cried.
The video and speech brought tears to my eyes! You have been such an icon in the food world and your words bring to life my own similar experiences. I have followed you I guess for a "lifetime" and am now challenged to put pen to paper about my own road to becoming a "chef" at home. Congratulations...well deserved. Enjoyed seeing you again in Charleston, SC!
That gorgeous platter of seafood at Asador Bastian--what a striking still-life. It all looks exquisite.
Congratulations for the richly-deserved Lifetime Achievement award. And thanks for the inspiring reminder of the value of doing things we haven't done before.
Your story reminds me of actor Peter Capaldi (THE THICK OF IT, DOCTOR WHO) talking about winning an Oscar for Best Short Subject ("Franz Kafka's It's a Wonderful Life", which he both wrote and directed), having to scrape together enough money, with the help of star Richard E. Grant and producer Ruth Kenley-Letts, to fly coach round-trip to Hollywood, winning—only to discover that having an Oscar didn't get him an upgrade on his return flight to London!
OTOH, he said there's an entire Coach class worth of pictures of people happily showing off his Oscar....
Having eaten at both spots - albeit 8 years ago - I'm glad you were able to get to try at least one of them. I also love that I, a reader from Melbourne, Australia, know exactly the places you've mentioned. 👏🏼
Your culinary adventures in Chicago are absolutely mouthwatering! From the stunning courses at Alinea to the unique delights at Asador Bastian and the unexpected hospitality at Girl and the Goat, your descriptions bring the flavors and experiences to life. The gooseneck barnacles sound intriguing, and I love the tip on where to order them online. Your storytelling makes me want to book a trip to Chicago just to follow in your delicious footsteps.
Thank you for sharing these amazing food journeys!
Huge congratulations to you on the BIG award. So well-deserved, and of course, such good company in the past winners. AND, of course your stints in Berkeley, at the LA Times and the NYTimes before Gourme—and all you still write, including The Paris Novel.

Lovely post. My bread baker in Tucson was at your event as a judge. (He received the best baker award in 2022.) Said it was lots of fun.

BRAVA, Ruth!👏👏 So well deserved! You are a treasure to us all….
Loved your graceful acceptance speech and putting into perspective the evolution of food taste/ quality/accessibility over the years.
