We live far from upstate NY BUT I just happened to go to Fortune's ice cream this week and was BLOWN away by the malted pretzel ice cream! Tivoli was also adorable - go visit everyone!
We raised our family half a mile from Mary B Best’s storefront. My husband and I differ as to whether we ordered a special flavor for our older son’s bar mitzvah party or whether we let the boy (now 42 with 3 kids of his own) decide, but we all agree that it was absurdly delicious. The neighborhood wasn’t the same when the store closed. Thanks for reminding me how much I enjoyed that shop.
Growing up in Sheepshead Bay Area of Brooklyn, the iconic but sadly closed Lundy’s Restaurant served the best whole belly fried clams preceded by a bowl of Steamers.
If you want the best Sonoran tortillas and cuisine come on down to Tucson where El Guerra Canelo invented the Sonoran Dog and makes a killer Carne Asada Carmelo
"My dear, are you planning an orgy" Haha I loved this! Makes me miss Oakland. Not sure if you remember coming to SF Cooking School back in 2015 (I think I have a photo with you and the rest of my pastry class somewhere). Truly just as inspired by you now as I was then!
Have you not heard of PollyAnns, in the Sunset? I was a student at SFSU 1979-82 and brought my visiting mother, a confirmed ice cream connoisseur (mom, what exactly IS “jamocha almond fudge anyway?”). She was delighted to find unusual flavors (broccoli?) before Ben & Jerry co-opted the fun names. Opened in the mid-50s the current owners have created new flavors with Asian flavors. Maybe not as “elevated” as Mary B Best offerings, but no less worthy.
Every summer for the past four decades I've vacationed in Maine. And every single one of those times I made it a point to stop in Kittery, Maine and eat at Bob's Clam Hut. It's the culinary high point of my entire year.
I’m so happy to see Uncle Gaylord’s mentioned—it was a mainstay in my early hippie childhood. The first mint chip I ever had that wasn’t from a chain. I have the ice cream recipe book. ❤️
I quite enjoyed the ice cream article and the menu. Have ordered tortillas flour and the amazing colored corn. Will try to replicate the Romanoff ice cream next week with my 3rd hand Pacojet.
Caramelo Tortillas are, indeed, the best - It's one of the few things I am thankful for here in Oz and they are sold in only a few shops. Planning to pick up a few packages tomorrow on a shopping excursions and restock my freezer!
I grew up in Maine, and I could always tell when mom picked me up at the bus stop when she’d been frying clams. The aroma was unmistakable. Once a year we’d go to Ken’s Place in Saco, ME, as I recall, and we could have whatever we wanted. It was just a tiny take-out stand at the time, but their fried clams were delicious - in batter(like my mom’s) or crumbs, which I preferred. My nana always got clam cakes. It was part of growing up. I haven’t really found a fried clam to match those -

Lundy’s was an iconic experience. A grand old dame of clam heaven and blueberry pie!

Bob’s Clam Hut in Kittery...I think of it daily since my July visit on the way down after a collaboration with Sarah at Nīnajune

Oh dear...I'm only two hours from Kittery and might need to make a trip for these fried clams...
Thanks for the tortilla tip. I know the best of Maine is in a league of its own, but I do like Zinnia's fried clams...
