Another wonderful post from the old home town. Thanks Ruth! Living in the Berkshires full time, and getting back to LA infrequently, it's a vicarious pleasure to read about the current restaurant scene and to be reminded of some of the old favorites. Reading about Scandia, and dating myself in a big way, I'm reminded how few so-called "good" restaurants existed when I was growing up – at least as far as my father was concerned: Scandia was one, and then there was La Rue (corner Sunset/Sunset Plaza Drive), Chasen's (Beverly Dr), Jack's at the Beach (on the old Ocean Park Pier), Perino's (Wilshire)and Romonoff's (N. Rodeo in BH). Please keep it coming, Ruth.
I was so excited to hear you talk of going to Yuca's. I have been going there since it opened in 1976. It is the best, and I never miss going there when I'm in the area.
Took my team to the Mozza outpost in London, and we were all delighted. I had a bianco pizza with extra housemade fennel sausage on top. Wow. And that butterscotch budino ... heavenly. Incidentally, I have a Vincent Price cookery/travel book from the 60s, in which a Scandia menu is pictured. Will try to get a photo to you.
Enjoyed the article even if not being able to visit LA BUT $33.00 for a pound of "toffee" plus probably $15.00 shipping?? Maybe LA or New York City prices but not for most of us!
I love it when you share like this. I always make a note for when I'm in that particular area. That's how I found Bakesale Betty in Oakland. You are the best, thanks!
I think I recognize the plates in the Scandia picture! I have one from a garage sale - and (wonderfully!) I saw them in one of the films about Marcel Pagnol's childhood La gloire de mon pere or Le chateau de mon mere, don't remember which.
You went to LA and your first stop wasn't In and Out Burger? WHAAAA!
I lived in LA for a grand total of 1 year, and have suffered from Littlejohn's withdrawal ever since. It's tragically hard to come by in Copenhagen.

Thanks for the reminder about Littlejohn's. It's the best toffee, and a mandatory stop when we're in L.A.
We live in Santa Barbara. It will be an honor yo have you over for dinner
Thank you for all of the re-reminders of the great restaurants in LA
Saving this! Yum.
Thank you for the reply
If I uncover anything epic, will let you know
I am curious about the almost desperate press release! Also, what a horrifying encounter. Lucky indeed.

Just want to go out to eat now!
