LOVE the reading list. The Apprentice illustrates how Jacques Pepin developed his work ethic and went outside his comfort zone working at Howard Johnson’s. Can’t wait to read Hotel Splendid. His books were such an important part of my childhood.
Wow, what a great list of books. I wish I could read Laurie Colwin again for the first time -- but I'm happy to report, she's just as good the 10th time around. I still give her book Happy All the Time to every newlywed couple.
Being lucky enough to live very near Hatch in Las Cruces NM, I just now returned from our annual ristra run with the entire back of the van filled with various sizes of red chile ristras and wreaths and lovely garlic braids. And ate the NM State Fair winner green chile cheeseburger at Sparky's for lunch. In NM you can watch high school football while breathing the very fragrant exhaust from the local chile processing plant nearby. It is a magical place.
Your missives are so good, evocative. This one I particularly love! I want sock that chauavinist pig HARD. Most good, great cooking has been done by women & if his mother was good at it: who cares???? My husband & I now share dinner cooking duty. He is retired, loves food & now cooking. Fine food is mostly genderless, so that fellow needs to re-think his sophomoric ranting.
What a great list of books! I’ve only read a few (and those are some of my favorites) so am excited to have more to look forward to reading! Thank you!
Even growing up around fantastic, natural Italian cooks, nothing thrilled (or taught) me more about food and the world than Gourmet, which I discovered and devoured in my 20's and until its demise! It's why at 70+ I still find such pleasure in all things "food" - I've ordered 3 new books and a slew of chiles! Thanks Ruth!!
What a wonderful list, thank you. I've filed all of these as "to read" on Goodreads. I'd add anything by Gabrielle Hamilton...Blood, Bones and Butter was just great.
xxx
Do you have a copy of the "cooking pages" Nora Ephron sent to her friends before she died? It would be worth publishing?
Sorry Fugu - what a delight! Thank you for sharing…

Oh I want to read every one! Thanks for a great list. Of course I’d include your memoir, Tender at the Bone, on my list.

Brrrrr. Well put. I enjoyed this post and the listing of books. A few I haven’t read and will try to obtain them. Thank you.

Some of the books I have read, but you have uncovered some new treasures for me. Thank you.
