In any “So what are you doing for the holidays” discussion, I always ask people about their family dish—grandma’s specialty, the travel-inspired creation, the item no one ever eats, the just plain weird concoction that no blood relative should have to endure. Most people have to think a minute, then realize, yes, there is that one… ours is bing cherry salad (no cranberry anything until my brother in law came along)—not a salad at all but cherry jello, canned cherries, pecans (untoasted & thus quickly mushy). Tells you everything about my mom’s palate & cooking
This was my fave time of the year. The annual delivery of the Thanksgiving Issue of Gourmet was always a big day in my house.
unusually interesting, thank you.
Ruth, would you happen to have the Gourmet pear pudding recipe with maple syrup recipe? It’s one of the many great lost recipes. Thanks.
I propose a new subject for this forum - the recent death of Julie Powell and her contribution to democratizing and demystifying the food world.
Gotta give cider syrup a try!

My mom and my favorite ice cream is coffee. We are both from NJ, 25 miles from NYC. Ian is spot on.
I remember Ian. Did he get an academic position?
My fave thanksgiving I made turkey curries and an Indonesian rice table. Everyone created their own flavor combo and were really happy.
Never heard of cider syrup! Thanks!
Adored the old hotel menu! Nice research-THX
I’d love to make a batch of cider syrup - do you have a recipe to recommend?
