This was my fave time of the year. The annual delivery of the Thanksgiving Issue of Gourmet was always a big day in my house.

In any “So what are you doing for the holidays” discussion, I always ask people about their family dish—grandma’s specialty, the travel-inspired creation, the item no one ever eats, the just plain weird concoction that no blood relative should have to endure. Most people have to think a minute, then realize, yes, there is that one… ours is bing cherry salad (no cranberry anything until my brother in law came along)—not a salad at all but cherry jello, canned cherries, pecans (untoasted & thus quickly mushy). Tells you everything about my mom’s palate & cooking

My mom and my favorite ice cream is coffee. We are both from NJ, 25 miles from NYC. Ian is spot on.

My fave thanksgiving I made turkey curries and an Indonesian rice table. Everyone created their own flavor combo and were really happy.
