This is truly awesome and much valued especially bc i grew up with a great appreciation of design. my great uncle Nathan George Horwitt was an industrial designer, most known for the Movado Museum Watch. his archives are in the Cooper Hewitt Museum and he will have a big chapter in my upcoming memoirs!
I so enjoyed reading this article. Your father’s career was amazing! Such an innovator, and I love that he continued throughout his life to experiment with book design. I knew some of the people mentioned in the article— Jeanyee Wong was my friend and calligraphy teacher, and I met the legendary Herman Zapf at a talk he gave at the Grolier Club many years ago. The descriptions of the process of book design and book manufacturing bring back fond memories of my time working as a customer service rep for Hadden Craftsman. It was always a treat to paginate books and help publishers select cover and binding materials.
You must be so proud of your dad’s career and I’m thankful that you shared it with us. I’ll be keeping an eye out for the books that he designed. 💫
I loved seeing the copy of Ulysses you showed me when I came to your house to interview you for the Berkshire Magazine profile. I recall your saying that was the only one of his book covers that he signed. And it was a good one! Scott
Thank you SO much for this. I have wondered about your father since reading about your early years - your mother dominated so much, but it was clear that he had a life separate from the mishigas of the family. I never bothered to research him, so this was a bit of quiet joy.
I took time from the book I am producing to read this. Thank you so much for sharing. Book design done well is an amazing thing to see. Its ability to draw in a reader is a goal I constantly strive towards and voraciously consume every bit of inspiration I come across.
How interesting and how proud you must be. I was fascinated st his inventiveness. Also had a little giggle at the end with the half page about Hopalong Cassidy: I was a fan at 5.
Wow this was so interesting and I had to Google the Nadia book to see what that looked like, which brought back a flood of memories since of course I owned that book—probably got it the year it came out, as I (like soooo many) was obsessed with her! Thanks so much for sharing!

Simply incredible. Thanks for sharing a bit of your origin story. Really impressive to consider how you’ve continued and expanded the Reichl legacy.

Very cool. And a good looking father!
There were a lot of Jews in design back then. Wow. More than 100 years!
Thanks from a graphic designer.
