Some sixty years ago, I found myself the cook on a 60 foot sloop. I volunteered, the gods forgive me. However, working in the tiniest space proved to be very efficient. The only problem I remember having is when I'd hear "Prepare to come about" from above decks. Usually I had lunch laid out on the fold up counter ready to serve, when that command was given. I'd throw myself across the food and hope!
Your old newspaper edition of "The art of the kitchen" is phenomenal. Very inspiring people and stories mentioned in that article. The whole time I was reading the article, I had a big smile on my face. I am a self-taught chef and very well understand the importance of a kitchen space. Honestly I have learned a lot from your article.
I finally watched the delightful video of your lovely kitchen. I wish I'd had the privilege of seeing it before I redid my ca. 1950 kitchen. I would love the refrigeration drawer in my cooking zone. Your space is beautiful!
Our 1881 house is large with big, airy rooms, and a small (11’ x 18’) kitchen made smaller by four doorways, three 36” x 7’ windows, and a staircase. When we redid it there wasn’t an inch to spare. The cabinets were scrounged from a science lab at a local college that was being rehabbed. Solid maple and the counter tops are 39” high — what a plus! Overall it turned out well — mainly by luck — and emptying the dishwasher is a breeze!
We decided a few years ago to start a kitchen remodel. The first thing I changed was everything I use, is on the wall at hand. Pots, pans, tools - all hanging and easily reached. It's not beautiful, but it helps. The second thing was raising the counter - with my disabilities, bending over because the counters were too low made cooking painful. Now it's fun again.

I so want that herb bread right now. Want want want.
Thrilled to watch the 2015 NYT video and read the article about you and your kitchen. Absolutely gorgeous, in all ways.

One of the things I've always loved about your posts and writing is you love both the fancy and the simple things. The burrito is a perfect example.
Hi Ruth,
Is there any chance I could get a larger font version of the article?
All my best
